Spoilers…

John H Saturday 26th June, AD 2010

Just as a quick aside, I’ve written a post about the series finale of Doctor Who. It is one massive succession of spoilers from beginning to end, so rather than post it here I’ve put it on a WordPress.com blog set up specially for the occasion.

Note that I am not, repeat not, setting up a Doctor Who blog. That way madness lies. ;-)

No, no, of course not, you absolutely wouldn’t set up a doctor who blog, that would be utterly ridiculous

    *doesn’t click, honest*

For those of us on the left side of the pond (who are watching Dr Who about three weeks behind the UK), could you give us a non-spoilerish, summary reaction? I’m interested to hear your thoughts on the Moff’s first series finale. (Personally, I always found RTD’s finales to be ridiculously overblown and predictable: “Oh no! Yet another armada of flying Daleks is going to destroy the universe! Phew, disaster averted! I love you, Rose! The End.”)

    Non-spoilerish summary. Let’s see.

First, it’s interesting that opinion seems divided between those who thought part 1 of the finale was much better than part 2, and those who thought the opposite. (I’m in the latter camp, though part 1 was still very good, and certainly made it feel like a long wait for part 2!)

Second, Moffat’s finale was much less OTT than RTD’s. Much more reliant on ideas and characters rather than blowing whatever was left in the SFX budget. Yeah, I know, that came as quite a shock to me, too… ;-)

Third, it confirmed that what Moffat is really interested in is (a) time travel, (b) relationships, and (c) how time travel affects relationships. Oh, and memory. I probably can’t say much more than that…

Oh, and fourth: the finale was much more closely tied in with the preceding episodes. Not in a “strawberry surprise”, “ta-da! Big Bad Wolf is Rose!” way, but in a way which makes you go back and think about incidents from previous episodes and what was really going on…

    Sounds great; I can’t wait.

It seems to me that an interest in the implications of time travel has been a hallmark of Moffat’s writing for DW going all the way back to “Curse of the Fatal Death”:

Here in the Antipodes it takes a good six months for the Beeb’s cans of videotape to arrive by steamer. We typically get to see the Christmas Special around late June/ early July.
